Your Opportunity:
The mobile technology team is responsible for designing, building, supporting and involving client-facing native mobile apps for Charles Schwab. We have been a key partner working with product teams to deliver excellent client experience to the millions of Schwab users.
As a team member, you will work in one or more product channels to build mobile apps that meet and exceed client’s needs, work closely with product teams to pair your mobile technology knowledge with product knowledge to create creative and innovative solution that thrill customers and disrupt competitors. This role requires the Development Engineer in Test to design, develop, and maintain automated test solutions using Appium. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and execute testing strategies that meet our quality standards.
What you have:
- Developing and maintaining functional test automation scripts for mobile application using Appium with Java.
- Ensuring automation is constantly running, analyzing, and promptly reporting on failures.
- Working cross-organizationally both within Schwab and with external vendors, both on and offshore to define environment requirements, identifying automation-related tools, developing and executing best automation process and practices.
- Fostering our end-to-end testing approach across multiple applications.
- Partnering with geographically distributed teams to plan our future QA tooling and technology decisions.
- Liaise with Product teams, Product Owners and Scrum Masters to integrate project plans, testing schedules, and metrics reporting.
What you have
Required Skills:
Experience
• 4+ years in software QA/SET/SDET, including automated testing
• 2+ years testing native mobile apps (iOS and/or Android)
• 2+ years building or maintaining mobile test automation frameworks
Programming & Automation
• Proficiency in Java (primary language for current automation stack)
• 2+ years hands-on with Appium for mobile UI automation
• Demonstrated ability to design and implement reusable test utilities/framework components (not only test-case scripting)
• Experience implementing assertions, waits/synchronization, test data handling, and failure diagnostics in automation code
Mobile Testing Fundamentals
• Working knowledge of mobile-specific test risks: device/OS fragmentation, app lifecycle/backgrounding, network variability, permissions, notifications, and install/upgrade flows
• Experience validating across real devices and/or cloud device farms
• Ability to define mobile test coverage by layer (smoke, regression, end-to-end)
Tooling & Delivery
• Experience integrating automation into CI pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps)
• Experience with defect and test management tools (e.g., Jira + Zephyr, Xray, TestRail)
• Ability to triage failures and distinguish product defects from test/environment instability
• Experience with XCUITest and/or Espresso
• Ability to read or contribute in Kotlin and/or Swift
AI-Assisted Testing Skills
• Practical use of AI coding/testing assistants (e.g., Copilot) to accelerate test design or automation coding in day-to-day work
• Ability to review and correct AI-generated code before merge, including locator strategy, wait logic, assertions, and test stability
• Ability to create structured prompts that produce reproducible automation outputs (same input → same expected test artifact pattern)
• Understanding of data/privacy guardrails when using AI tools (no sensitive production data in prompts; follows company policy)
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in regulated domains (financial services, healthcare, etc.)
• Experience coaching QA engineers on automation standards and practices
• Experience using AI to generate test scenarios from requirements/user stories and then converting them into executable Appium tests
• Experience using AI to assist flaky-test triage (log analysis, probable root cause hypotheses, rerun strategy)
• Evidence of measurable impact from AI usage (for example: reduced script authoring time, increased coverage, faster defect discovery)
