Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Strategy and Governance is a core department within the Enterprise and Operational Risk Management (EORM) organization and is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining and continuously improving Schwab’s ERM Program. ERM Strategy and Governance supports Schwab in managing and mitigating risks within risk appetite across risk categories using a consistent risk management process that enables effective risk identification and assessment, response, measurement and monitoring, and reporting and escalation through Schwab’s integrated risk governance structure. We support achieving Schwab’s “Through Client’s Eyes” strategy by evolving and executing the Company’s best-in-class risk management program in alignment with achieving our objectives to grow, operate effectively, scale and increase efficiency while developing and retaining top talent.
Reporting to the Managing Director, ERM Strategy & Governance, this Director role is responsible for leading Schwab’s Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) Program Team and is accountable for the strategy, operations, and continuous improvement of the RCSA environment. The ideal candidate has an entrepreneurial growth mindset and passion for unlocking the power of people and data to achieve business strategy and risk management objectives while ardently pursuing opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiencies leveraging emerging tools and technologies.
What you’ll do
You will have the following key responsibilities:
- Develop and lead the high-performing team of risk management professionals who administer the overarching RCSA environment and related risk programs.
- Establish and maintain the multi-phased RCSA strategy and roadmap, including framing and marketing the value proposition and value add of RCSAs in alignment with business strategy and risk management objectives.
- Develop and lead delivery on prioritized strategic initiatives that continuously improve the RCSA environment considering evolution in policies, products, processes, technologies, and risks.
- Own and lead the breadth of business-as-usual operations across the RCSA environment, including standards, core activities, stakeholder and senior management engagement, and assurance activities.
- Develop and maintain calibrated success measures (e.g., key performance indicators and service level agreements) for RCSA operations, including periodic reporting on performance, challenges, opportunities, and improvements.
- Advance the development, implementation and use of existing tools and emerging technologies (e.g., AI and automation) to baseline, streamline, and increase the scale and efficiency of RCSA processes.
- Drive the relevance, enrichment and use of RCSA data, outcomes and insights in risk governance, risk assessment, and other risk management routines.
- Steward ongoing integrity and reliability of RCSA data through combined quality control, quality assurance, and monitoring plans, including resolution of data quality concerns.
- Champion sound business requirements, project and change management rigor and agile delivery of RCSA functionality.
- Foster and nurture deep relationships with stakeholders, including senior management, across the three lines of defense to influence and support buy-in, direction and decisions across the risk management ecosystem.
- Develop and deliver executive-level presentations to senior management and regulators to effectively explain the RCSA Program.
- Serve as functional subject matter expert for matters related to the RCSA environment, including risk reviews, incoming due diligence, testing, internal and external audits, continuous monitoring, and regulatory exams.

Requirements:
- MBA or combination of Bachelors degree and equivalent experience.
- 10-15 years of experience in increasingly responsible risk management roles, broker-dealer and banking experience a plus.
- Ability to take a broad view of continuous process improvement and operational discipline to optimize the way we work.
- Outstanding communications and presentation skills, including comfort with very senior and/or large audiences.
- Displays confidence and courage in business and talent decisions with a demonstrated ability to take decisive action when needed, including championing ideas, position, or dissent.
- Able to make solid, informed judgment calls in response to both the planning, budget and expense management environment and the day-to-day business issues.
- Thrives on initiating, building, and cultivating strong authentic relationships inside and outside direct team with high self- and situational awareness and emotional intelligence.
- Highly collaborative; navigates and activates alignment across organizational silos with a bias for action and ability to prioritize multiple activities in a changing environment
- Experience consulting with all levels of management and working collaboratively with various groups within the enterprise with potentially disparate objectives.
- Strategic, and passionate about Schwab’s mission, and knowledgeable/curious about our business, clients, and competitors. Will be a thought partner by enterprise colleagues.
