The Senior Portfolio Manager, Tax-Exempt Money Funds will serve as a key member and people leader within the Money Fund investment team. This role combines direct portfolio management responsibility with leadership of investment professionals responsible for managing the Tax-Exempt Money Funds.

The successful candidate will oversee portfolio construction, security selection, strategy implementation, risk management, portfolio performance, and investment process enhancement while fostering a high-performing team culture focused on accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

This individual will possess a solid knowledge of municipal fixed income markets, with deep expertise in managing Municipal Money Funds including thorough knowledge of Rule 2a7, yield curve management, tax-sensitive investing, and municipal market structure.

What You'll Do

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of portfolio management professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and support employee growth through coaching, mentoring, career development, and ongoing feedback.
  • Promote an inclusive and highly engaged team environment that encourages diverse investment perspectives and continuous improvement.

Portfolio Management & Investment Leadership

  • Oversee and contribute to all aspects of the Tax-Exempt Money Fund investment process, including market analysis, portfolio construction, security selection, risk management, portfolio performance, and portfolio monitoring.
  • Establish investment strategy across Tax-Exempt Money Fund sectors, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, investment objectives, and risk parameters.
  • Apply Municipal Money Market knowledge and expertise to security selection, sector allocation, WAM / WAL and liquidity management, yield curve positioning, and relative value analysis.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of portfolio construction frameworks, investment guidelines, and risk controls that support consistent investment outcomes across strategies.
  • Monitor market conditions, credit developments, liquidity trends, fund flows, regulatory changes, and other factors affecting municipal money market portfolios.

Technology & Process Innovation

  • Champion the use of portfolio management technology, analytics, and data-driven investment processes to improve portfolio construction, risk oversight, workflow efficiency, and investment outcomes.
  • Partner with technology and operations teams to enhance portfolio management platforms, investment analytics, and workflow efficiencies.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen investment capabilities.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Communicate investment philosophy, portfolio positioning, market outlook, and performance drivers to peers, business colleagues, and senior leadership.
  • Generate and interpret portfolio performance to evaluate investment decisions and inform future portfolio positioning.
  • Collaborate closely with credit research, investment risk, legal, compliance, operations, product management, and technology teams to achieve investment and business objectives.
  • Effectively represent Fixed Income and Schwab Asset Management internally and externally with business partners

What you have


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in Municipal fixed income portfolio management, asset management, or a related investment role.
  • Broad knowledge of financial markets and investment securities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think strategically; to anticipate industry and economic trends, to adapt to unexpected influences and developments and assess their impact on the financial markets.
  • Prior experience leading, mentoring, or managing investment professionals and teams.
  • Deep understanding of Municipal markets, yield curve management, risk management, and portfolio construction.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to evaluate portfolio risk, performance, and identify relative value opportunities across Municipal money fund sectors.
  • Advanced knowledge of Bloomberg and fixed income analytical tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex investment concepts clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound investment judgment and make effective portfolio decisions in evolving market environments.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-management skills with the ability to influence outcomes across investment and business functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing Tax-Exempt Money Funds
  • Experience with Bloomberg, Aladdin, or similar investment management platforms.
  • Hands-on experience managing portfolios in consideration of internal and regulatory investment requirements, and within compliance frameworks.
  • Experience leading investment process enhancements, and portfolio management technology initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success balancing people leadership responsibilities with direct portfolio management accountability.
