Managing Director, Financial Model Validation
Overview:
The Managing Director, Financial Model Validation will lead enterprise oversight of Schwab’s highest-risk balance sheet and financial models, with particular emphasis on deposit behavior, liquidity, interest rate risk, capital planning, and financial forecasting. This leader will ensure model validation standards, performance monitoring, and governance practices provide rigorous effective challenge, support regulatory confidence, and enable senior leadership to rely on these models for critical financial decisions across market conditions.
Key Outcomes:
- Lead enterprise validation oversight for Schwab’s highest-risk financial models, including deposit behavior, liquidity, interest rate risk, capital planning, market risk, credit risk, margin risk, and Enterprise Finance models.
- Provide rigorous oversight of very high-risk deposit models, including Dynamic Equilibrium Deposit Decay (DEDD) and other deposit behavior models critical to balance sheet management and financial resilience.
- Manage the validation pipeline and priorities for financial models, including performance monitoring, issue remediation, and senior-level reporting.
- Lead financial validation team within Model Risk Oversight (MRO), building capability across validators responsible for Schwab’s complex and material financial and financial risk models.
- Serve as a senior leader for regulatory engagement and audit readiness, ensuring validation work meets Federal Reserve expectations and Internal Audit requirements.
- Represent MRO in senior committees and executive interactions with leaders including as necessary the General Auditor, General Counsel, Chief Risk Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Banking Officer.
- Strengthen enterprise model risk governance by advancing validation standards, performance monitoring expectations, and emerging financial risk considerations.
What you have
Required Experience & Key Skills
- Extensive experience leading model validation, model risk oversight, or quantitative risk management within a large, complex, highly regulated financial institution.
- Deep technical expertise across financial, balance sheet, and risk models, including brokerage deposit behavior, liquidity, interest rate risk, capital planning, market risk, credit risk, and related enterprise finance models.
- Strong command of model validation standards and lifecycle requirements, including conceptual soundness, data quality, model performance monitoring, change validation, annual review, documentation, controls, and issue remediation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of related supervisory expectations, with experience engaging regulators, Internal Audit, and senior risk governance forums on model risk matters.
- Recognized thought leader in balance sheet modeling and financial risk modeling, with credibility across Treasury, Financial Risk Management, Finance, Enterprise Risk, Audit, and Model Risk Oversight.
- Proven ability to provide independent challenge while maintaining trusted partnerships with senior business, finance, treasury, risk, technology, and control partners.
- Strong executive influence skills, with the ability to create alignment, resolve competing priorities, and drive decisions across a complex, matrixed organization.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex quantitative, technical, and regulatory issues into clear, decision-ready insights for executives, committees, regulators, and Board-level audiences.
- Proven people leadership experience, including leading quantitative teams, developing senior talent, setting clear expectations, strengthening accountability, and building an inclusive, high-performance culture.
- Enterprise mindset with sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to lead through ambiguity, change, regulatory scrutiny, and evolving risks, including emerging risks and advanced analytics considerations.
