Role Summary:
The Managing Director, SAM & Head of Money Market Strategies reports to the CIO of SAM and leads an 11-person team responsible for the portfolio management of Schwab Money Market funds and ETFs. This leader is accountable for setting the strategic agenda for the Money Market platform, overseeing investment and liquidity management practices, and ensuring portfolio construction, trading execution, and risk oversight are aligned with fiduciary standards, regulatory expectations, and Schwab’s broader client and enterprise objectives.
The role serves as a senior investment leader for SAM, providing market perspective and strategic guidance to executive leadership, the Funds Board of Directors, risk committees, and cross-functional partners. Success in this role requires deep capital markets expertise, strong judgment in changing rate and credit environments, and the ability to lead experienced portfolio management and trading professionals while influencing across investment, risk, legal, compliance, operations, and distribution stakeholders.
Key Outcomes:
- Set strategic direction for Schwab Money Market Funds, overseeing investment strategy, liquidity management, risk, governance, and platform performance.
- Lead process improvement and operating discipline across the Money Market platform to strengthen scalability, controls, regulatory readiness, and client experience.
- Shape, interpret, and apply money market regulatory guidance, representing Schwab credibly with regulators, industry peers, exchanges, counterparties, and vendors.
- Make disciplined investment decisions that balance yield, liquidity, credit quality, regulatory requirements, shareholder interests, and approved risk frameworks.
- Lead and develop a high-performing portfolio management and trading team, building accountability, bench strength, succession depth, and disciplined decision-making.
- Serve as lead liaison with Risk and senior stakeholders on fund strategies, performance, market dynamics, and investment matters affecting SAM and Schwab.
- Partner across legal, compliance, operations, technology, finance, product, and distribution to sustain strong controls, operational excellence, and clear communication.Serve on key SAM/CSIM leadership and risk committees and present clear executive-level insights to the Funds Board, committees, and firm-wide risk forums.
What you have
Required Experience & Key Skills
- 15+ years of senior investment, portfolio management, trading, or research experience across capital markets, with deep expertise in money markets, short-duration fixed income, liquidity management, credit analysis, and portfolio construction.
- Strong understanding of SEC Rule 2a-7, money market fund regulation, stress testing, liquidity thresholds, credit quality standards, fiduciary obligations, and governance expectations.
- Proven judgment across rate, liquidity, credit, and market environments, with the ability to balance yield, principal stability, shareholder interests, and risk discipline.
- Executive presence to advise senior leadership, engage with the Funds Board, and translate complex market, portfolio, liquidity, and risk topics into clear recommendations.
- Demonstrated leadership of experienced portfolio management and trading professionals, with a track record of building accountability, developing talent, and strengthening succession depth.
- Ability to influence effectively across investment, risk, legal, compliance, operations, technology, product, finance, distribution, regulators, industry groups, counterparties, and vendors.
