The Strategy & Innovation organization is responsible for corporate strategy, strategic planning and programs, innovation, and artificial intelligence across the business. Within this organization, the AI Strategy, Acceleration and Program team, known as ASAP, helps shape, organize, and accelerate Schwab’s enterprise AI agenda in partnership with business, technology, data, and risk and control functions.
We are seeking a Director, AI Trust and Governance (PL) reporting to the Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer to lead the orchestration and continuous evolution of Schwab’s cross-enterprise AI governance operating model, enabling responsible AI innovation at scale while maintaining trust and managing risk. This leader will work across business, product, technology, data, legal, risk and control functions to create a cohesive enterprise approach to AI governance across the lifecycle from ideation and intake through assessment, deployment, monitoring, material change and retirement.
This is a high impact leadership role for someone who can bring structure to ambiguity, influence senior stakeholders across organizational boundaries, translate complex requirements into practical operating models and balance responsible risk management with innovation, business value and execution.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Strategy & Operating Model:
- Lead the evolution of Schwab’s cross-enterprise AI governance strategy and operating model across the AI lifecycle.
- Continuously evaluate Schwab’s AI governance practices relative to industry best practices.
- Establish clear AI governance pathways, decision rights, accountability, handoffs and escalation mechanisms across business, technology and risk and control functions.
- Translate AI strategy, policies, standards and regulatory expectations into practical governance mechanisms that enable responsible execution.
- Identify structural gaps, overlaps and friction across existing governance bodies and drive improvements that create a cohesive enterprise governance experience
- Partner with risk and control functions to establish and operationalize risk-based governance approaches appropriate to different AI archetypes and use cases.
- Promote reuse of approved patterns, capabilities, controls, evidence and prior decisions where appropriate to reduce unnecessary duplication and improve consistency.
- Enable streamlined pathways for lower-risk and repeatable AI use cases while ensuring higher-risk, regulated, autonomous, client-facing or materially changed solutions receive appropriate scrutiny.
- Support engagement with regulators on AI.
Orchestration:
- Orchestrate cross-enterprise governance across business, product, technology, architecture, data, model, risk, legal, compliance, privacy, cybersecurity, third-party risk and other relevant functions.
- Guide AI products through appropriate governance pathways while preserving each function’s established accountability and independent authority.
- Bring stakeholders together to resolve ambiguous ownership, conflicting requirements, stalled decisions and cross-functional dependencies.
- Frame complex issues into clear options, tradeoffs and recommendations for executive decision making.
- Identify systemic bottlenecks and patterns across the portfolio and translate them into operating-model, process, policy, guidance or technology improvements.
Accountability:
- Create end-to-end visibility across AI products including ownership, lifecycle stage, governance status, key risks, dependencies and decisions.
- Establish executive level reporting and insights on governance effectiveness, decision velocity, exceptions, recurring friction and areas requiring leadership intervention.
- Define and monitor meaningful measures of AI governance effectiveness and maturity.
What you have
Required Experience:
- Significant experience in financial services or another highly regulated industry, including governance, risk management, controls, compliance, product review, technology governance, or a related field
- Experience helping business, product, or technology teams navigate enterprise governance and approval processes
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex cross-functional work and influence senior stakeholders without direct authority
- Ability to translate complex risk, regulatory, policy, and technical requirements into clear actions for non-specialist audiences
- Strong facilitation, structured problem solving, program management, and executive communication skills
- Sound judgment and the ability to balance responsible risk management with innovation, client value, and business execution
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
Governance and AI Experience:
- Working knowledge of enterprise governance models and the distinct responsibilities of business owners, governance facilitators, risk and control functions, and independent assurance
- Familiarity with AI governance, model risk, technology risk, data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, third-party risk, product governance, supervision, or responsible AI
- Understanding of governance considerations for generative, agentic, embedded, vendor-provided, and client- or representative-facing AI
- Experience with risk-based review models, governance patterns, reusable controls, intake workflows, inventories, or related reporting
Preferred Experience:
- Experience at a large financial-services institution
- Direct experience with AI, advanced analytics, model governance, digital products, technology transformation, or emerging-technology governance
- Experience improving governance workflows or supporting client-facing or regulated products and services
- Experience engaging senior executives, governance committees, regulators, or boards
