Managing Director, Cybersecurity Engineering & Architecture

The Managing Director, Cybersecurity Engineering & Architecture, is responsible for the strategic direction, architecture, engineering, and operational excellence of Schwab's enterprise cybersecurity platforms and services. This executive leader will drive the design, modernization, and delivery of cybersecurity capabilities that protect Schwab's clients, employees, applications, data, and technology infrastructure while supporting the firm's business objectives, risk management framework, and regulatory obligations.

Leading Cloud Security Engineering and Operations, Cryptographic and Certificate Engineering and Operations, Cyber Architecture and Design, and Engineering Operations, this role ensures cybersecurity capabilities are resilient, scalable, secure-by-design, operationally effective, and aligned with Schwab's enterprise technology strategy. The Managing Director serves as a key technology and cybersecurity leader, partnering across Cybersecurity, Technology Services, Enterprise Architecture, Risk, Compliance, Legal, and Audit to strengthen cyber resilience, enable innovation, and advance Schwab's long-term technology modernization priorities.

Key Outcomes

Strategic Leadership & Business Alignment

• Establish and execute the enterprise strategy for cybersecurity engineering, architecture, and platform modernization across Schwab's technology ecosystem.
• Define the long-term vision, operating model, and technology roadmap for cybersecurity platforms to support business growth, client trust, operational resilience, and regulatory commitments.
• Ensure cybersecurity architecture, engineering, and operational priorities are aligned with enterprise technology strategy, business objectives, and risk management goals.
• Partner with executive leadership across Cybersecurity, Technology, Infrastructure, Architecture, Risk, Legal, Compliance, and Oversight functions to drive enterprise-wide cybersecurity outcomes.

Architecture, Engineering & Technology Innovation

• Drive strategic decisions related to cybersecurity architecture, engineering standards, technology investments, platform consolidation, and technical debt reduction.
• Establish scalable and resilient security-by-design principles across cloud, infrastructure, applications, networks, identity, and emerging technologies.
• Lead modernization of cybersecurity platforms and engineering practices to improve operational efficiency, automation, resilience, and customer experience.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, threats, and industry trends to ensure Schwab maintains a forward-looking and effective cybersecurity posture.

Operational Excellence & Resilience

• Ensure operational excellence across cybersecurity engineering and security platform operations through measurable service performance, reliability, availability, and resilience objectives.
• Drive continuous improvement in platform health, service delivery, incident readiness, and recovery capabilities.
• Establish governance, performance metrics, and accountability mechanisms that provide transparency into cybersecurity platform effectiveness, operational risk, and technology investments.
• Strengthen Schwab's cyber resilience capabilities through architecture, engineering, and operational practices that support business continuity and rapid recovery.

Risk, Regulatory & Control Effectiveness

• Provide executive oversight for cybersecurity control effectiveness, technology risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Serve as a key partner during regulatory examinations, audits, and risk reviews, ensuring engineering and architecture programs meet evolving regulatory expectations.
• Balance security, business enablement, operational efficiency, and technology modernization through risk-based decision making.

Organizational Leadership

• Lead through multiple layers of leadership while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Develop and retain executive and senior leadership talent to ensure a strong succession pipeline and sustainable organizational capability.
• Build a high-performing engineering and architecture organization capable of delivering at enterprise scale.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on cybersecurity strategy, technology risk, resilience, and emerging threats.

What you have

Required Experience & Key Skills

Executive Leadership

• Fifteen or more years of progressive leadership experience in cybersecurity, technology engineering, architecture, or infrastructure organizations, including significant experience leading large-scale enterprise teams.
• Proven success leading complex engineering, architecture, and operational organizations in highly regulated industries such as financial services, banking, healthcare, or other similarly complex environments.
• Experience leading organizations through significant transformation, modernization, mergers, organizational change, or technology evolution initiatives.

Cybersecurity & Technology Expertise

• Deep expertise across cybersecurity engineering, enterprise architecture, cloud security, cryptography, infrastructure security, application security, identity and access management, network security, and operational resilience.
• Strong understanding of modern cloud platforms, hybrid infrastructure environments, automation, platform engineering, and security operations.
• Demonstrated ability to design and implement secure, scalable, and resilient architectures supporting enterprise-scale business operations.
• Experience driving security-by-design and secure engineering principles across large technology organizations.

Strategy & Business Acumen

• Demonstrated success defining enterprise technology strategy, developing multi-year roadmaps, and executing transformative technology initiatives.
• Strong business acumen with the ability to connect cybersecurity investments and technical priorities to business outcomes, operational efficiency, and organizational risk reduction.
• Experience managing significant technology budgets, investment planning, vendor strategy, and resource allocation decisions.
• Ability to evaluate competing priorities and make informed risk-based decisions that balance security, resiliency, regulatory requirements, operational objectives, and client experience.

Regulatory & Risk Management

• Deep understanding of cybersecurity governance, regulatory expectations, technology risk management principles, and industry frameworks.
• Experience interacting directly with regulators, auditors, executive management, and boards of directors regarding cybersecurity strategy, risk, and control effectiveness.
• Demonstrated ability to establish governance structures, risk management practices, and performance measures for enterprise cybersecurity programs.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Experience within large financial services, banking, brokerage, or other highly regulated organizations.
• Experience leading cloud security transformations and enterprise cryptographic modernization efforts.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies including AI/ML security, quantum risk considerations, platform engineering, and cyber resilience strategies.
• Relevant industry certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CCSP, or equivalent executive-level credentials.
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
