The Schwab Asset Management (SAM) Engineering organization is a part of Schwab Technology Services that is responsible for Schwab's investment management, operations, data, and research platforms. Everything that SAM Engineering builds serves Schwab’s mission of helping clients reach their financial goals.
As a Quantitative Software Engineer in the SAM Engineering Investment Research Technology group, you will work as a hands-on technologist focused on our quantitative research initiatives. We currently support a variety of existing on-premise and cloud solutions, and we are actively expanding the capabilities of these platforms to drive cutting-edge research and product development activities.
The Quantitative Software Engineer - Asset Allocation will lead of team of engineering professionals focused on delivering unique production and research capabilities related to strategic asset allocation. Schwab clients rely on a key centralized platform to maintain and distribute a variety of distinct asset allocation hierarchies used directly by clients and advisors as well as in managed investing offers. This platform is used to classify the full Schwab investable universe daily across the various asset allocation hierarchies and serves as the central distribution point for the firm's Capital Market Expectations (CMEs) and other key datasets. This role will be responsible for the ongoing development and maintenance of the asset allocation data platform as well as enabling various research initiatives focused on asset allocation, including CME models, multi-asset allocation models and portfolios, and glide-path models. The Investment Research Technology Group operates within a mature Agile and DevOps model in partnership with our business stakeholders, requiring active engagement with Product Owners, Researchers, Architects, and other Partners — in managing requirements, design, coding, testing (unit and functional), deployment, and post-release support.
* Lead a team of engineering professionals responsible for creating and delivering key products and datasets used for asset allocation decision-making throughout the Schwab enterprise
* Interface with business partners in Schwab Asset Management, the Schwab Center for Financial Research, Schwab Wealth Advisory, and various other enterprises to understand business and technical requirements to build asset allocation products and datasets which meet the investing needs of retail clients, advisors, asset management professionals, and managed investing solutions
* Provide technical leadership in implementing rules-based classification engines capable of efficiently processing millions of instruments to meet demanding overnight delivery timelines
* Oversee delivery and ongoing enhancements to full-stack applications utilized by business users to oversee data production activities and provide data validation for large datasets
* Operate successfully within the Schwab technology ecosystem, partnering with architects, engineers, business analysts, scrum masters, and other infrastructure, security, and governance teams to deliver products in compliance with enterprise standards
* Develop and motivate individual engineering staff to deliver high-quality solutions that meet the needs of clients and business partners. Support staff in career development to unlock long-term value for the organization. Build high-performing, collaborative development teams that deliver predictably within the Agile framework as well as operate effectively within the broader Schwab technology organization
• Build data visualizations and other tooling to enable model researchers to efficiently monitor model performance and stability, as well as to interpret model outputs.
• Assist in selection and integration of data related tools, frameworks, and applications required to expand platform capabilities.
• Lead proof-of-concepts to understand the appropriateness of new methodologies and/or technologies for our platforms.
• Analyze business problems and processes; help refine requirements and design solutions for them.
• Be a champion of new ways of collaborating with technology and business partners
• Influence and implement improvements and efficiencies in both the technical and non-technical aspects of the development process
What you have
To ensure that we have fulfilled our promise of "challenging the status quo," this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in computer science, information systems, math, engineering, or other technical field, or equivalent experience
- Seven or more years of experience with Python or Java, including applications leveraging Spring Batch and the broader Spring Framework
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages used for quantitative investment model development and analysis (e.g Python or R)
- Experience building performant data pipelines operating on large financial datasets under stringent data delivery timelines
- Proficiency in designing and implementing data models to support efficient data retrieval and aggregation of financial datasets, including complex hierarchical structures
- Familiarity in developing distributed data processing and streaming frameworks and architectures
- Experience leveraging continuous integration/development tools (e.g. Jenkins, Docker, Containers, OpenShift, Kubernetes, and container automation) in a CI/CD pipeline
- Demonstrated capability to lead and motivate technical teams by building trust and emphasizing transparency in decision-making
- Experience designing and developing integration and regression testing frameworks to ensure system stability and performance
- Exposure to institutional multi-asset investment processes, including risk and return estimation, asset allocation specification, and model portfolio creation
