The Sr. ERISA Consultant role is responsible for tracking all regulatory and legislative changes that impact defined contribution plans, working with internal partners on impacts to processes and procedures relating to regulatory and legislative changes, providing thought leadership on all aspects relating to M&A support, supporting internal partners on complex administrative issues that include areas such as loans, distributions, and correction of plan defects, lead communications with plan sponsors and consultants about technical subject matters, read and interpret pre-approved and individually designed plan documents, and in general support of all areas related to ERISA Compliance & Consulting.    

As a key resource for all internal partners, plan sponsors, and advisors, the Sr. ERISA Consultant will be accountable for all regulatory and complex administrative questions that arise.  You will have an understanding of and adherence to Schwab policies and practices and mitigation of operational and financial risk to Schwab. 

What you are good at:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills sharing complex messages to all audience types
  • Strong understanding of all ERISA regulations
  • Strong background in all types of Defined Contribution plan documents
  • Strong background in all types of coverage and non-discrimination testing for Defined Contribution plans
  • Support Sales efforts, as needed.
  • Work reciprocally within the organization, share standard methodologies, and aid in the continuous improvement of the services provided by Schwab to ensure your success.
  • Execute client and regulatory changes.
  • Effectively and authentically communicate Schwab’s value to clients.
  • Apply specialized knowledge within all aspects of qualified and non-qualified retirement plan recordkeeping and understand the broader impact on the company.
  • Validated ability to build and sustain strong relationships with clients and partnerships with internal associates as well as key contacts at within the industry to stay ambitious.
  • Will be a leader/mentor to others in the department to further the team

What you have


To ensure that we fulfill our promise of "challenging the status quo," this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.

Required Qualifications:

  • 10 + years of experience working with employer sponsored Retirement Plans as your minimum requirement.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • You have ASPPA, CEBS and/or NIPA designation preferred. QPA, CPC or equivalent certification/designations preferred.
  • Validated understanding of ERISA, industry rules and regulations, and Non-Qualified plan design leads to your success in the role.
  • Ability to identify, develop and implement client strategies, retirement plan design opportunities, and explain compliance results, and IRS reporting
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight by your manager.
  • Ability to drive corporate and departmental initiative to effective and timely conclusion
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are critical in your role.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, problem seek, and influence and build consensus among team members, leadership, and clients through presentations.
  • Ability to identify client issues that pose a risk to the firm, handle them appropriately and recommend solutions to address future issues effectively ensures your growth as a Sr. Relationship Manager.
  • Effectively run multiple plan types with varying levels of complexity.
  • Time management skills and ability to handle multiple assignments at a given time.
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, take initiative and demonstrates a high degree of personal integrity, resilience, honesty and respect for others
  • Inspire and support those around you to challenge the status quo; effect small and large changes in order to continue to elevate the teams' effectiveness and level of service provided to our clients
  • Meet deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate confidence, accountability, and teamwork with each interaction
  • Flexibility to travel for client visits and sales presentation

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities
