The Portfolio Performance Engineering (PPE) Team represents a centralized domain responsible for managing holdings, investment performance, and automated rebalancing across the universe of investment portfolios within Schwab. The PPE Development team is looking for a Sr Specialist – Software Development & Engineering who will excel in a dynamic fast-paced environment. PPE offers a wide range of technology opportunities for the best and brightest people to grow and demonstrate their skills as they develop high-performance financial applications. 


The right candidate will have experience with Quality Assurance (QA) best practices and proven experience performing all QA related functions including, but not limited to vetting requirements, creating test plans, test data and test cases, executing test cases, creating automation scripts, and reviewing regression results to quickly determine if our products are ready for market. QA team members work very closely with developers on an integrated team dedicated to delivering high-quality solutions. The right candidate will enjoy being part of a highly interactive, Agile team.  

What you'll do:

  • Design and implement comprehensive test strategies for complex features, including functional, performance, and security testing. 
  • Architect and develop advanced automated testing frameworks and tools that improve team efficiency and test coverage. 
  • Identify testing gaps and quality risks in existing systems and develop plans to address them. 
  • Lead defect triage sessions, helping the team understand quality issues and prioritize fixes. 
  • Review test plans and automated tests from other team members, providing constructive feedback and guidance. 
  • Collaborate with developers to improve code testability and integrate testing earlier in the development process. 
  • Analyze test results and quality metrics to identify trends and recommend process improvements. 
  • Document testing approaches, frameworks, and best practices to share knowledge across the team. 
  • Apply analytical thinking to anticipate potential failure modes and develop tests to catch them early. 
  • Demonstrate thoroughness by ensuring comprehensive test coverage for critical functionality. 
  • Communicate quality status, risks, and recommendations clearly to various stakeholders. 
  • Understand business priorities to align testing efforts with highest-value features and greatest risks. 
  • Understand testing approaches and quality practices used by related teams that contribute to your product. 
  • Influence and improve your team's overall testing strategy, automation frameworks, and quality processes. 
  • Identify potential quality risks at integration points between your team's components and related systems. 
  • Integrate approved AI tools such as Copilot throughout the testing lifecycle, holding generated output to the team's quality, performance, security, and reliability standards before adoption. 
  • Build reusable Copilot agents, skills, and prompts for test assets, and help define guardrails that support responsible AI adoption across the team. 

What you have


To ensure that we fulfill our promise of "challenging the status quo," this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience. 
  • 5+ years’ experience in Quality Assurance for complex projects related to Automated Investing and Financial Planning (risk-based model assignment and goal tracking) that include batch data processing and REST APIs that are written in a Microsoft technology stack, including .NET and C#. 

Experience must include: 

    • 6+ years of experience writing test automation in C# or JavaScript. 
    • 5+ years of experience testing authentication and authorization in .NET REST APIs. 
    • 5+ years of experience writing web service automation using frameworks including RestAssured, RestSharp, SoapUI, and Parasoft SOAtest. 
    • 5+ years of experience working with MongoDB using efficient storage and retrieval techniques. 
    • 3+ years testing Kafka integrations in .NET executables. 
    • 3+ years of performance testing experience using JMeter. 
    • 1+ years of experience with Docker. 
  • Strong knowledge of financial concepts relevant to Automated Investing and Financial Planning products, including automated rebalancing, asset class allocation, tax lost harvesting, wash sales, and various performance calculations. 
  • Proven experience with black box and white box testing techniques and tools. 
  • Strong written and verbal communications, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to interact and communicate successfully with business partners and technology teams. 
  • Experience with Agile Development Practices, Scrum and supporting apps.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Self-starter who can grasp difficult concepts and large architectures quickly and stay on top of new and emerging technologies. 
  • Ability to think freely and produce creative solutions when tools do not work. 
  • Experience working with resources in different geographical locations and offshore vendors.  
  • Knowledge of the software development lifecycle and processes such as SCRUM and Agile. 

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities
