Your Opportunity

Schwab remains committed to providing increased visibility to career growth opportunities and job requirements. This posting announcement is part of increased transparency and while all qualified applicants will be reviewed and considered, this organization has a preferred candidate identified for this role.

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.

We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location.

Your Opportunity

You will partner with engineers, security and risk stakeholders, and platform/architecture teams to translate complex requirements into durable, reusable data solutions. In addition to hands-on engineering, you will provide technical direction, establish standards and guardrails, and lead efforts that improve reliability, quality, and time-to-value for internal customers. In this role, you will serve as the technical lead for the SCS Data Mart, building and operating scalable, secure, and well-governed data products on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to enable cyber security analytics, risk insights, and reporting. You will own and evolve the data engineering approach for the SCS Data Mart, ensuring alignment to Schwab Global Data Analytics (SGDA) architecture patterns and influencing key architectural decisions across ingestion, modeling, orchestration, observability, and data access.

What you’re good at

  • Serving as technical lead for the SCS Data Mart, defining engineering direction and ensuring adherence to SGDA architecture patterns and enterprise standards.
  • Driving data architecture and design decisions (data domains, modeling patterns, partitioning/clustering, orchestration strategies, interfaces/contracting, and lifecycle management) to ensure scalability, performance, and maintainability.
  • Designing, building, and operating high-scale data pipelines and curated data products using GCP services such as BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Composer (or equivalent orchestration tooling).
  • Establishing and enforcing best practices for data quality, data governance, lineage, metadata management, and secure-by-design data access.
  • Providing technical leadership across multiple teams in SCS and STS: guiding implementation approaches, reviewing designs and code, mentoring engineers, and raising overall engineering maturity.
  • Proactively identifying systemic risks (data integrity, pipeline fragility, cost/performance bottlenecks, operational gaps) and leading remediation through improved architecture, automation, and standards.
  • Building strong cross-functional partnerships with security customers, SMEs, and architecture/platform teams to align priorities and deliver roadmaps that scale.
  • Implementing robust observability for data pipelines and data products (monitoring, alerting, SLAs/SLOs, incident response runbooks) to ensure high availability and predictable delivery.
  • Developing and optimizing complex SQL transformations and data models to support analytics use cases and downstream reporting with traceable logic.
  • Communicating clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders—explaining tradeoffs, documenting decisions, and influencing alignment across teams.

What you have

To ensure that we have fulfilled our promise of "challenging the status quo," this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, including building production-grade pipelines and curated datasets consumed by analytics/reporting users.
  • Advanced expertise with Google BigQuery, Google Cloud Storage, Cloud Composer, and related GCP services; strong proficiency in Python and SQL for data processing and automation.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership experience, including leading architecture/design discussions, setting engineering standards, and guiding other engineers through reviews, mentorship, and technical direction.
  • Proven experience implementing data governance and security practices (role-based access, sensitive data handling, auditability, and data quality controls) in a regulated environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to handle ambiguous, high-impact work while balancing near-term delivery with long-term platform health.

Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering, architecture, and business/security stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing data cataloging/metadata management solutions and improving self-service data discovery.
  • Experience with Power BI development and/or other visualization tools (Tableau, Looker, Grafana) and enabling self-service analytics on BigQuery.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code and DevOps tooling (e.g., Terraform), CI/CD for data pipelines, and automated testing strategies for data.
  • Knowledge of cyber security data, control frameworks, and risk/metrics analytics (e.g., NIST, CIS controls, ISO, COBIT).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Google Professional Data Engineer, security certifications such as Sec+, CISM, CISSP, CRISC, CISA).

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities
