Role Overview
The Director, Tax Provision & Technology is a key tax leadership role within Schwab’s Corporate Tax organization, responsible for leading the company’s income tax provision processes and driving the strategy, optimization, and governance of tax technology and data solutions. This role serves as the primary day-to-day owner of the tax provision process, while working closely with the Director, Tax Provision, Tax Compliance & Special Projects.
The position partners closely with tax, finance, accounting, and technology stakeholders to ensure accurate, efficient, and well-controlled tax reporting supported by scalable and modern technology solutions. The role also plays a critical part in supporting Schwab’s ongoing tax process automation, system enhancement, and data transformation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Provision Leadership
- Serve as the primary leader and owner of Schwab’s quarterly and annual ASC 740 income tax provision process, including current and deferred tax calculations, effective tax rate analysis and forecasting, discrete items, uncertain tax positions, and valuation allowances.
- Execute the tax provision process, working with the Director, Tax Provision, Tax Compliance & Special Projects, ensuring appropriate alignment and escalation of significant judgments or issues.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and well-documented tax provision deliverables in compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal policies, and external audit requirements.
- Review and oversee tax provision calculations prepared in Corptax, ensuring consistency between provision, compliance, and forecasting data.
- Partner with Financial Reporting, Accounting Policy, and external auditors on tax accounting matters, disclosures, and audit support.
- Identify, analyze, and communicate complex tax accounting issues, providing clear recommendations and support for tax leadership decision-making.
Tax Technology & Process Optimization
- Own and advance the tax technology roadmap supporting the tax provision and income tax compliance processes.
- Act as the primary business owner for Corptax (tax provision and returns), including system configuration, enhancements, data integration, testing, and governance.
- Drive process improvement and automation initiatives using Microsoft Excel (advanced formulas, Power Query, macros/VBA), Alteryx, and similar tools.
- Partner with Finance, Technology, and Data teams to improve data quality, system reliability, and end-to-end process efficiency.
- Support integration with ERP and upstream financial systems, including PeopleSoft.
Data, Controls & Governance
- Design and maintain controls over tax provision data flows, calculations, and system outputs.
- Ensure consistency of data across provision, compliance, and forecasting processes.
- Establish documentation standards for tax processes, models, and technology tools.
- Support SOX compliance and internal and external audit requirements related to tax reporting systems.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Manage and develop tax professionals supporting tax provision execution and tax technology initiatives. Manages two direct reports.
- Act as a thought partner to others in tax leadership on technical tax accounting matters, system strategy, and special projects.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Corporate Tax, Finance, Accounting, Internal Audit, and Technology teams.
- Support special projects, systems implementations, and business initiatives impacting tax reporting.
What you have
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive corporate tax experience with significant ASC 740 income tax provision responsibilities.
- Hands-on experience with Corptax for tax provision and/or income tax compliance.
- Strong technical knowledge of U.S. corporate income tax and tax accounting.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with process automation.
- Experience leading tax technology initiatives or system implementations.
- Demonstrated experience in the design, governance, and optimization of data analytics and workflow automation solutions supporting tax processes and, as needed, broader Corporate Controllers Group processes (e.g., Alteryx).
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with PeopleSoft or comparable ERP systems.
- Experience in a large, complex, publicly traded company environment.
- Prior people leadership experience or demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams.
