Director, Head of Digital/Crypto, Technical, and Commodity Research

Charles Schwab Corporation is seeking to recruit an outstanding market-focused leader to serve as Director, Head of Commodities and Technical Analysis for the Schwab Center for Financial Research.  The Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR) is a research organization whose mission is to help Schwab clients achieve their goals by providing accurate, clear, actionable, relevant, and timely research, tools, and advice.   The Director, Head of Commodities and Technical Analysis will lead a team research effort focused on generating actionable market insights and trading strategies covering commodities, digital assets and technical analysis across asset classes including equities. This team’s mission will be to deliver timely actionable insights to consultants, advisors, traders and self-directed clients on the Schwab platform.

This role requires deep understanding of digital assets, commodity markets and technical analysis; including indicators and quantitative tools in an equity and cross-asset framework.  In addition, this is a leadership role which requires vision in shaping and advancing the team’s research agenda.

Reports to: Christian Menegatti, Managing Director and Head of Investment Research & Strategy, Schwab Center for Financial Research

Other Key Relationships: Mark Riepe, Head of Schwab Center for Financial Research; Lorraine Gavican-Kerr, Head of Trading Services Education Strategy; Colleagues across the Schwab Center for Financial Research, as well as Schwab Asset Management, and Sales, Marketing and Communications; the Schwab Network

Key Role Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the research agenda for commodities and digital assets.
  • Define and execute the research agenda for technical research and strategy across equities, fixed income, FX, hard assets and digital assets.
  • Build, manage and mentor a team of researchers and strategists across the areas of coverage.
  • Partner with macro and asset class specialists at the Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR), as well as other partners across Schwab Asset Management (SAM) to ensure consistency of output.

Research and Analysis

  • Lead research agenda and contribute to the design of the data and infrastructure required to analyze commodities and digital assets, as well as to produce technical research on a systematic basis.
  • Lead research and process to develop a point of view on commodities and digital assets and lead development of proprietary technical analysis models, research, charting frameworks and trading signals.
  • Lead the team and contribute to producing and delivering thematic research and thought leadership across areas of coverage including technical commentaries and actionable trading ideas while highlighting technical market dynamics, risks level, inflection points, key levels, momentum shifts, price patterns to provide actionable insights.
  • Oversee the development of analysis and research infrastructure including dashboards and visualization charting tools.

Communication

  • Communicate research and views to both internal and external audiences
  • Contribute to broad team strategy meetings and to the team portfolio strategy views by providing a consistent point of view across areas of coverage
  • Link Schwab’s viewpoints and research with clear, actionable steps which Schwab representatives, advisors, and clients can implement
  • Communicate via multiple channels, i.e., public speaking at client events, interactions with consultants and advisors, written reports for both internal and external use, videos, coaching workshop and media
  • Serve in a public-facing capacity as needed, communicating Schwab’s viewpoint on markets in the media and at industry events while positioning the firm as a thought leader in technical analysis.
  • Participate in and contribute to committees and governance activities to establish broad market views

What you have


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in financial services in research, strategy or portfolio management positions
  • Advanced Degree in Finance; CFA, CMT or equivalent designation strongly preferred
  • Strong market knowledge across asset classes (equity, FX, fixed income, commodities and derivatives)
  • Expertise with technical analysis and charting frameworks
  • Demonstrated leadership managing teams and working across teams
  • Strong communication skills with ability to distill complex market concepts into clear and actionable insights
