Your Opportunity

Schwab remains committed to providing increased visibility to career growth opportunities and job requirements. This posting announcement is part of increased transparency and while all qualified applicants will be reviewed and considered, this organization has a preferred candidate identified for this role.

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.

We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

Within Estate Services, the Risk function plays a critical role in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with complex beneficiary and estate matters. As Senior Manager, Legal Risk, you will establish and lead a centralized legal function embedded within the Risk organization, with direct responsibility for overseeing legal strategy, attorney leadership, and proactive risk mitigation.

This role is designed to shift the organization from a reactive, fragmented approach to legal risk toward a proactive, integrated model that reduces litigation exposure, improves decision quality, and strengthens partnerships across Legal, Operations, and business teams. You will serve as the primary legal authority for the Risk organization, guiding high-risk decisions, influencing upstream business practices, and ensuring consistent legal standards across estate and beneficiary-related matters.

As a people leader, you will oversee attorneys within the Risk function, driving accountability, development, and consistency in legal analysis and recommendations. You will also play a key leadership role in reducing reliance on external counsel, improving outcomes in arbitration and litigation matters, and enhancing the firm’s ability to identify and mitigate legal risk earlier in the lifecycle.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the legal risk strategy for Estate Services, helping the business identify, assess, and manage complex estate and beneficiary-related matters.
  • Provide guidance on high-risk issues, including beneficiary disputes, estate administration matters, litigation, arbitration, and escalations.
  • Build and lead a team of legal professionals, creating consistency in analysis, recommendations, and decision-making.
  • Partner closely with Legal, Risk, Operations, OSAS, and business leaders to align legal guidance with practical business solutions.
  • Identify trends, strengthen governance routines, and help reduce reliance on external counsel through earlier, more proactive legal support.
  • Advise senior leaders on legal risk exposure, outcomes, and opportunities to improve processes and reduce business disruption.

What you have

To ensure that we fulfill our promise of "challenging the status quo," this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and active license to practice law
  • 7+ years of legal, compliance, or risk management experience, preferably within financial services
  • Experience managing or advising on litigation, arbitration, or regulatory matters
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, assess, and mitigate legal risk in complex environments
  • Experience leading teams or providing functional leadership over legal professionals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting estate services, wealth management, or beneficiary-related matters
  • Strong understanding of broker-dealer and investment advisory regulatory environments
  • Proven ability to translate legal risk into business decisions and operational action
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage senior stakeholders
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment with competing priorities
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to identify trends and implement scalable solutions

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities
