Schwab Technology Services enables the future of how clients manage their money by delivering innovative, reliable technology products and services. The Quote Plant team supports a critical market-data platform that processes billions of real-time updates and requests across multiple asset classes and powers Schwab’s trading, web, mobile, and enterprise applications.
As a senior individual-contributor engineer, you will provide hands-on technical leadership across the design, development, modernization, and operation of high-volume, low-latency applications. You will solve complex engineering problems, guide technical decisions, and collaborate across product, architecture, quality, infrastructure, operations, and business teams to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient solutions. Your impact will include strengthening production stability, reducing risk, mentoring developers, and advancing automation, observability, responsible AI adoption, and modern engineering practices. This role does not include direct people-management responsibilities.
What you have
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Technology, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of hands-on software development or application engineering experience.
- Experience designing and delivering complex, business-critical applications that span multiple systems or organizational boundaries.
- Advanced experience with Java, C++, or C#; object-oriented design; REST APIs; distributed or event-driven systems; Linux or Unix; relational databases; SQL; and source control.
- Ability to apply design patterns, conduct code and design reviews, and produce maintainable, testable, production-quality software.
- Experience building and supporting highly available services with demanding resiliency, security, performance, scalability, and operational-support requirements.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, including the ability to mentor developers and influence engineering direction without direct authority.
- Ability to communicate technical options, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing distributed, event-driven, or service-oriented platforms at enterprise scale.
- Experience with high-throughput messaging technologies such as Kafka, IBM MQ, RabbitMQ, or comparable platforms.
- Knowledge of concurrency, multithreading, networking, memory management, performance engineering, and low-latency system design.
- Hands-on experience with cloud services, Kubernetes, Docker, containerization, or data-center modernization.
- Experience applying DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and reliability-engineering practices.
- Experience leading incident troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, risk remediation, and sustainable corrective actions in highly available, client-facing environments.
- Financial services, trading-technology, exchange-market-data, feed-handling, quote-processing, or real-time data-distribution experience.
- Experience using Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, Large Language Models, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Model Context Protocol, or Agentic AI in engineering or operational workflows.
- Proven ability to adapt to shifting priorities, collaborate across functions, and independently deliver complex solutions from concept through production support.
