QA Engineering Sr Manager
Your Opportunity
At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.
We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location.
Leads a mixed team of Manual QA and Automation (SDET) testers (FTE and contractors)
to deliver high-quality software releases. This people leader drives test strategy execution,
plans and coordinates end-to-end (E2E) validation, and partners cross-functionally
(Developers, Product, DevOps, Support) to ensure predictable release outcomes through
strong prioritization, delegation, and execution management.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage and develop a team of Manual QA and SDET engineers across FTE and
contractor roles; set clear expectations, goals, and operating rhythm.
• Plan and lead release test execution: scope validation, align entry/exit criteria, coordinate
test cycles, triage issues, and communicate readiness/risk.
• Own E2E test planning and execution across integrated systems; ensure coverage for
critical user journeys and cross-team dependencies.
• Prioritize work based on risk, customer impact, and delivery timelines; delegate
effectively and ensure balanced workload and timely completion.
• Partner with Developers, Product, and Program/Release Management to align quality
strategy with the roadmap and milestones.
• Drive continuous improvement of QA processes (test planning, defect management,
reporting) and quality metrics (trend analysis, defect leakage, stability).
• Partner with QA leadership and Developers on automation strategy; identify candidates
for automation, reduce regression time, and improve reliability of test suites.
• Facilitate clear, timely communication: status, risks, dependencies, and decisions;
influence without authority across cross-functional teams.
• Help teams remove blockers and resolve cross-team dependencies.
People Leadership & Contractor Management
• Hire, onboard, coach, and support career development for FTE team members; provide
regular feedback and performance management.
• Manage contractor capacity and delivery: onboarding, task assignment, quality
expectations, and coordination with vendor leadership (as applicable).
• Create an inclusive, accountable team culture focused on collaboration, continuous
improvement, and customer outcomes.
• Define team norms (definition of done, test evidence expectations, defect severity
standards) and ensure consistent adoption.
On-Call / Production Support Expectations
Over time, the role is expected to participate in the QA/Developers management on-call
rotation to support release events and production incidents, including coordination of
triage, communication, and follow-through on corrective actions.
What you have
To ensure that we have fulfilled our promise of "challenging the status quo," this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.
Required Qualifications
• Experience leading QA teams spanning both Manual QA and Automation/SDET
functions.
• Hands-on understanding of software testing practices (test planning, regression, E2E
validation, defect triage) and SDLC/CI/CD concepts.
• Demonstrated release execution management: planning, coordination across teams, and
delivery of test sign-off/readiness communication.
• Strong prioritization and delegation skills; ability to make risk-based decisions under
timeline pressure.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills; ability to influence stakeholders and
align on quality outcomes.
• Experience working with mixed staffing models (FTE + contractors) and distributed
teams.
• Experience leading distributed teams across onshore and offshore locations/time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
• Prior experience as an SDET, QE, or QA lead with exposure to modern automation
frameworks and test architecture.
• Working knowledge of test tooling (e.g., API testing, UI automation, test management,
defect tracking) and quality reporting dashboards.
• Experience improving signal-to-noise in automated suites (flaky test reduction),
optimizing regression duration, and driving shift-left quality practices.
• Experience supporting production incidents and post-incident corrective actions in an on-
call model
In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities
