Managing Director, New Products Legal Concierge Office
Your Opportunity
The Managing Director, New Products Legal Concierge Office, serves as the senior enterprise legal leader responsible for defining and executing the strategy, operating model, governance framework, and delivery model for Legal & Government Affairs’ (LGA) support of new products and services. The role enables Schwab to pursue client-focused innovation and strategic growth while maintaining disciplined legal, regulatory, and risk oversight.
This leader serves as the senior legal owner for new-product intake, issue identification, prioritization, escalation, and resolution across business units and legal entities. The Managing Director applies independent legal judgment, mobilizes subject-matter expertise across LGA, and delivers practical, timely, and implementable guidance that supports informed executive and governance decisions.
Key Responsibilities & Outcomes:
Enterprise strategy and governance
- Define and execute the enterprise legal strategy, governance framework, and operating model for evaluating and launching new products and services.
- Serve as the senior LGA representative supporting the Product Review Committee and New Products and Services Risk Oversight Committee, ensuring leaders receive clear legal conclusions, decision points, risk considerations, and escalation recommendations.
- Establish decision rights and escalation paths for matters requiring subject-matter expert review, outside counsel, executive leadership, or General Counsel awareness.
Legal judgment and product enablement
- Direct the legal and regulatory assessment of complex or novel products and services across Schwab’s broker-dealer, banking, advisory, technology, and other regulated activities.
- Translate complex and potentially competing legal requirements into practical freedom-to-operate guidance, clearly identifying acceptable paths, required controls, residual risks, and matters requiring senior approval.
- Ensure legal conclusions are well reasoned, appropriately documented, consistently applied, and aligned with Schwab’s risk appetite, regulatory obligations, and business objectives.
Cross-enterprise leadership
- Serve as the central legal point of integration across LGA, business, risk, compliance, technology, privacy, cybersecurity, and control partners.
- Mobilize and influence legal subject-matter experts without relying solely on direct authority, establishing clear accountability for decisions, deliverables, dependencies, and timelines.
- Resolve competing priorities and legal perspectives, escalating significant matters early and maintaining a consistent “One Schwab” and “no surprises” approach.
Transformation, scale, and measurable outcomes
- Expand and mature the NPLCO as a scalable center of excellence, improving intake, triage, assessment, documentation, reporting, and decision workflows.
- Establish measures of effectiveness covering responsiveness, cycle time, legal work quality, stakeholder experience, timely escalation, adoption, and capacity creation.
- Sponsor the disciplined use of AI and legal technology to accelerate issue identification, research, drafting, knowledge management, and decision support while maintaining appropriate attorney review and accountability.
- Reduce unnecessary business burden and outside-counsel dependency while strengthening legal consistency, transparency, and risk discipline.
Organizational and talent leadership
- Build and develop a high-performing team with the legal judgment, business knowledge, project leadership, and technology fluency needed to support increasingly complex product innovation.
- Establish clear priorities, roles, decision rights, and development expectations for the NPLCO team and extended network of legal contributors.
- Create a culture of constructive challenge, intellectual curiosity, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
