The Wealth & Advise Solutions Technology (WAS Tech) group within Schwab Technology Services (STS) is responsible for the applications, services, platforms and technologies required to deliver a suite of solutions for Schwab's Wealth & Advise Solutions business (not limited to Digital Advice, Financial Planning, SWA, AS)

WAS Tech Service Availability & Engineering (SAVE) is responsible for WAS Tech Platform health & operational excellence, cloud & infrastructure management, incident response & problem management, platform observability, instrumentation & security, change & release management and special ops programs & initiatives for all WAS Tech applications, services & platforms.

The Director, Software Development & Engineering, WAS Tech SAVE, will report to the Head of Advisor Services, Wealth & Asset Management Technology Operations (AWAT Ops) and will be responsible for operational leadership for WAS Tech applications. The role is responsible for leadership over Platform Health, Availability, Resiliency and all Operational & Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) aspects of the applications & infrastructure in scope with a focus on productivity and efficiency through process improvement, automation and tooling. The role will be responsible for bridging the gap between WAS Tech SAVE strategy & execution, through centralized management of all WAS Tech SAVE projects & programs to achieve WAS Tech strategic operational objectives.

This role will be responsible for:

  • Direct people leadership of SRE engineers structured around 1) L1 & L2 Production Services, 2) Release Services, and 3) Operational Services.
  • Closely partner with Managing Directors, Directors, Sr. Managers & Architects across WAS Tech to influence the continuous improvement of development/deployment practices that will streamline the QA to Production pipeline.
  • Provide thought leadership and drive actions required to successfully migrate WAS Tech applications to DC4 and ensure scalability & regional/zonal availability.
  • Partner with Managing Directors, Directors, Sr. Managers & Architects peers across STS, particularly TIS, IO&C, and other STS SAvE teams, to influence broader scale tooling, automation, and methodology consistency.
  • Partner with the Wealth and Advise Solutions business to communicate application health, and influence and drive priority on availability ahead of releasing new business capabilities.
  • Deliver business value through efficient, disciplined and predictable project execution of effective solutions to business problems and opportunities.
  • Facilitate the optimization of WAS Tech SAVE portfolio investments through objective and transparent oversight, governance, data management, and reporting processes.  
  • Develop best in class technology operations delivery talent​​​​​​​.
  • Consistent delivery against high priority, often complex and multi-dimensional commitments.
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and engagement as well as risk management to proactively identify and manage risk.

What you have


Required:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a technology leadership role, specifically across highly availability applications, distributed systems and technology delivery in a complex, diversified financial services environment.
  • Strong understanding & experience with infrastructure, databases and applications / application support or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated success leading Kanban, SCRUM, and DevOps teams and influencing senior technology leadership on DevOps and deployment practices.
  • Results oriented leader who takes the initiative and effectively distills strategy, analytics, and varied sets of input to drive to decisions and follow through to execution.
  • Strong business influence skills and able to shape, define and present a complete and thorough picture of Schwab’s control environment including developing thoughtfully written action plans, well-executed remediation’s and clear/regular communication to executive management
  • Experience managing a significant budget and hiring plan with material enterprise-wide business impact maximizing the investment
  • Experience managing highly talented technologists in direct and matrixed models
  • Experience in successfully leading change through complex environments and organizational structures
  • Leverage strategic and analytical capabilities to make sound, timely decisions based on client and field input supporting and maintaining a strong production environment including evaluating risk versus expense versus the client experience
  • Able to act decisively in making solid, informed judgment calls in response to both the technological and critical regulatory environment and the day-to-day business issues
  • Extremely strong client relationship management and negotiation skills required with the ability to assess and effectively communicate processing capabilities and identify alternative solutions for clients and business partners
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization
  • Strong emotional intelligence/maturity and substantial senior level executive presence
  • Experienced in effectively assessing, selecting and developing talent for the firm; adept at providing balanced, direct and actionable feedback to employees. Experience managing multiple priorities and overseeing distinct teams with varied strengths
  • Thrives on initiating, building and cultivating strong authentic relationships inside and outside the group; highly collaborative; navigates and activates alignment across organizational silos.

Preferred:

  • Technology Operations experience with Institutional, Advisor Services, Digital Advice, Financial Planning & Wealth business applications preferred.
